Citadel Ruin

Stone wall ruins. One of many sites in the area. Photo by Howard J. Partridge.

General View of the Citadel Ruin
Wupatki National Monument, Arizona

This pueblo ruin stands guard like a fortress atop a small hill of volcanic rock.  It once included fifty or so rooms on multiple levels.  A single passage on the south side was the only entrance into the complex, suggesting a concern with security.  Kayenta Anasazi influenced Sinagua Indians constructed the pueblo sometime during the 12th century.  Photograph taken in 1991 by Howard J. Partridge.
